HISTORY

Chinese New Year is a month-long celebration where people decorate, exchange gifts and enjoy a New Year's Eve feast. The celebration begins on the first day of the Chinese Lunar calendar where each year is named after one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. On New Year's Eve, lights are kept on in households throughout the night and fireworks and firecrackers are set off.

The Chinese New Year begins January 23, 2012.

  • The Chinese like to greet each other with "Gung Hay Fat Choy." This means "Happy and Prosperous New Year."
  • The favorite colors during Chinese New Year are RED and GOLD. Red symbolizes happiness, while Gold symbolizes wealth.
